Statement on Oceans and the Law of the Sea*

ZHANG Yishan **

In this 2005 statement, the Chinese representative comments on the state of the regime of the law of the sea, and on the activities at the UN relating to the topic. He expresses China's general views on issues relating to fishery and the protection of the marine environment, such as the need to keep a proper balance between (1) conservation and protection and (2) development and capacity building of developing countries.
