An Analysis of the Role of NGOs in the WTO

Lin Zhengling, Legal Adviser *

Xiamen Cigarette Factory China

Abstract

It seems that the WTO Secretariat has offered some room for NGOs to participate in both the policymaking and the dispute settlement in the WTO. The note points out the structural weaknesses in the ability of NGOs to do so. Following Richard Shell’s "The Trade Stakeholders Model", this note offers suggestions for making NGOs participation more meaningful so as to protect their interests.
